(Newser) – Former first dog Barney Bush, famous for his "Barney Cam" tours of the White House and for occasionally chomping on a reporter, has died. George W. Bush and Laura Bush say their famous 12-year-old pooch had lymphatic cancer. The Barney video tradition started in 2002: With public access to the White House more restricted in the aftermath of 9/11, Laura Bush sent Barney out to prowl the building with the camera. The 4.5-minute tour of holiday decorations was such a hit that his movies became an annual feature for the rest of Bush's presidency.

"Barney was by my side during our eight years in the White House," said the former president. "He never discussed politics and was always a faithful friend. Laura and I will miss our pal."

Many years ago I invented a hands free dog leash and sent one to Barney with his name imprinted on the lease.I received a letter from the White House that it was received.I am very curious if Barney ever got to use the leash with his name on it.I never followed up before but I was saddened by his death and it brought back memories of the leash especially made for Barney.I wish the President Bush and his wife Laura strength in their loss of Barney.

This is the first time George W. Bush has been in the news for months -- and it's only for his dog. Bill Clinton, George Bush Sr. -- even Jimmy Carter are still making headlines and public appearances. But GWB has crawled under a rock, and wasn't even invited to the Republican convention last year. This is his punishment for being a hopeless, idiotic puppet for the neo-cons, the military industry and gun-toting hillbillies everywhere. Slaughter hundreds of thousands of people, destroy the global economy, wreck the environment, force untold millions into unemployment and poverty -- and then go hide in Texas. Thanks, George. America's most shameful presidency was the Bush-Cheney disaster, and we'll be paying the price for that monstrosity for generations.
