(Newser) – Police got rough with the alleged killer of US sniper Chris Kyle last night, Tasering him in his jail cell and tying him to a chair, ABC News reports. Authorities say guards at the central Texas jail Tasered Eddie Ray Routh, 25, when he refused to return his dinner tray, became angry, and tried to attack them. A jail official said Routh was also placed in solitary confinement and restrained to a chair on suicide watch. Routh has been charged twice with capital murder but has offered no confession or even suggested a motive, police say. Authorities are holding him on a $3 million bond.

This is outrageous. The guards should have first asked politely for the dinner tray back. After Routh refused, they should have used "pretty pretty please". Further escalation could have been mitigated by the "I'm begging you, please" or the "look, you made the warden cry, now please" methods of de-escalation.

I just finished another story about this guy. Seems he's been hospitalized twice for psychiatric observation. once for threatening to kill his whole family. Makes me wonder what the hell Kyle was thinking when he took this guy to a gun range? Did he REALLY think this would be a GOOD idea?
