(Newser) – President Obama will deliver his State of the Union address tonight, and every pundit out there has an opinion on how he should approach it. A sampling of the day's top unsolicited advice:

  • "It may be tempting to list a series of measures Obama wants Congress to pass," but Obama should avoid a laundry list, warns historian Julian Zelizer at CNN. "The president should think big," perhaps using the speech, as FDR did in 1941, to "offer a vision" for America, or to take a bold gamble, as Abraham Lincoln did by supporting emancipation in 1862. Or he can simply be honest about today's challenges, as Gerald Ford was when he said the state of the union "is not good."

  • Obama should invoke Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan by emphasizing "America's embrace of human and democratic rights, values that transcend parties and administrations," suggests Albert Hunt at Bloomberg. "Even Senator John McCain, in a grouchy mood, would applaud."
  • "President Obama is apparently planning to give us yet another salvo in that left-right war," laments David Brooks in the New York Times. "But it would be great if Obama gave an imaginative speech that reframed things as present versus future." Somewhere along the line, America went from a forward-looking nation to a consumption-minded one. Smart investments in tomorrow could change that.
  • Meanwhile, Chris Cillizza at the Washington Post has a more scientific look at what Obama should and shouldn't say, noting that in polls some policy ideas, like a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants, became less popular when Obama's name was attached to them. Others, like banning assault weapons or ending the war in Afghanistan, got a boost from the association.

An elected president of the United States is entitled to the respect of its own people. If you don't want the world to respect us, then do not respect the president. Respect has nothing to do with agreeing, but the majority does rule in this instance in our country..even if it does not rule in many other ways. How do you feel about majority rule? Do minorities have rights? Should rights be protected..all of them, or only the ones our forefathers thought about in the times before so many new inventions have entered our lives? Should you have any more rights than to vote your opinion in an election? For example, how far does our rights extend? Do we have the right to trample on other people's rights to get our own way? Do others have the right to trample on our rights if there are more of them or they have more money or power? These along with many others questions need be asked of ourselves before we spout off about things we have never experienced. How does it feel to be a new immigrant in this country or any country? How does it feel to have our child senselessly killed? How does it feel to have rich parents who give us every opportunity? How does it feel to live in a neighborhood where there are more drug dealers than law abiding citizens...or where gangs kill others? How does it feel to live in a country where healthcare is a right? How does it feel to live in a country where we can be killed because of our religious belief? Yes, so many questions we can ask ourselves before we begin to form opinions of our own. It's called independent thinking. Not a political party, but a philosophy of thought. From a philosphy comes an idea, then a decision how we think it is the best for humans, then we apply that to our beliefs? It is not easy to an Independent in this country where both political parties do not think outside their own box, but we as citizens can do this. It is our job as citizens. It is our job as responsible for the next generation...and this generation too. We must look to the past for things we did and how that turned out. What could we have done differently to get a better outcome. But more importantly we must look to the future to envision what could be...Really possible, not pipedreams. The we must act today for the good of the nation, our people, our children. No political party is doing that. They are trying to get your vote by appealing to your fears, your biases, your selfishness. I have my opinions and I am not represented by either political party, nor the tea party, nor the true bleeding hearts, nor some opinions of the justices, nor religious groups who want to control others lives when it is not their business. Our country is not perfect. Our leaders are not perfect. Our ministers are not perfect. We are children playing games. Keeping score by votes. Think about it.
