Depleted Chargers Shock Indy

Posted Jan 13, 08 5:20 PM CST in Sports

(Newser) – San Diego lost its starting quarterback and star rusher today but still clinched an upset over the Indianapolis Colts, 28-24, the AP reports. Backup QB Billy Volek led a 78-yard scoring drive late in the fourth quarter and the Chargers' D stiffened against Indy's passing attack. But San Diego running back LaDainian Tomlinson and starting hurler Philip Rivers departed with knee injuries.

The Chargers weathered a 402-yard passing onslaught by Manning and picked him off twice, both on tipped passes on likely scoring drives. San Diego also got strong games from backup running backs Michael Turner and Darren Sproles. The Chargers' reward for an eighth straight win? A game against undefeated New England in Foxboro, MA, where San Diego was soundly beaten in week two.
