(Newser) – South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard signed a law today that will allow the state's teachers and volunteer "school sentinels" to pack heat in the classroom. While other states have laws that in theory might allow teachers to be armed, South Dakota is believed to be the first to specifically allow it, the New York Times reports. About two dozen other states are considering similar measures.

The law was hotly debated in the legislature, with opponents calling it dangerous, but proponents saying it would give small, far-flung schools with no nearby police departments a way to protect themselves, according to the Argus-Leader. Each school will also be able to opt out of the "sentinels" program if it wishes.

No disrespect to those of you who are concealed carry permit holders -- I'm sure some of you are very experienced, and cool in a crisis -- but the only folks I want armed in my kids' schools are police officers or Federal agents who have had extensive academy training and years of field experience. There's a police officer on the staff of my son's high school, and I'm glad he's there, but I've seen enough emotional instability in some of the teaching and administrative staff, that I definitely don't want to see those folks carrying Glocks into the classroom.

This article illustrates the beauty of having 50 States as opposed to one overriding Federal government. Each State tries different things. We compare results. We learn. This is true evolution. Somehow liberals have co-opted evolution to mean growing into one government, but having only one government would kill civil/social evolution.
