Romney Wins Michigan Primary

Posted Jan 15, 08 8:06 PM CST in Politics

(Newser) – Native son Mitt Romney won the Michigan primary tonight, salvaging his campaign and scrambling the Republican race anew, MSNBC reports. With 99% of returns in, Romney had 39% of the vote, John McCain 30%, and Mike Huckabee 16%. Ron Paul finished a distant fourth, but he had nearly as many votes as Fred Thompson and Rudy Giuliani combined.

"It's a victory of optimism over Washington-style pessimism," said Romney. "The people of Michigan said they believe in someone who is going to fight for them." Both he and McCain pledged throughout the campaign to turn around the state's dismal economy. Hillary Clinton won the state's uncontested Democratic primary, in which neither Barack Obama nor John Edwards put their names on the ballot.
