(Newser) – Exxon Mobil is mopping up an underground pipeline spill that dumped thousands of gallons of oil on an Arkansas town, reports Reuters, as critics are using the accident to again pounce on the Keystone XL pipeline. A leak detected late Friday in Mayflower forced Exxon to shut its Pegasus pipeline, which was carrying heavy Canadian crude that ended up spilling onto suburban streets. It's not clear exactly how much oil spilled; the Pegasus pipeline is capable of moving 90,000 barrels per day. At least 22 homes in the area were evacuated, but officials say that they prevented the oil from entering a local lake.

It's the second mishap involving Canadian crude in a week, notes Reuters; a train derailment Wednesday dumped 15,000 gallons in Minnesota. "Whether it's the proposed Keystone XL pipeline, or ... (the) mess in Arkansas, Americans are realizing that transporting large amounts of this corrosive and polluting fuel is a bad deal for American taxpayers and for our environment," says Ed Markey, a Massachusetts Democrat.

Exxon is lying. I saw pictures of that lake and it HAS oil in it. They even have skimmers on it, but the oil is sinking to the bottom (like all tar sands oil does). Rachel Maddow covered this in a segment last night. She had two women on from Kalamazoo that were impacted by THAT spill over two years ago and it's still being cleaned up. This stuff burns your eyes, throat and lungs, and gives you headaches. The government would be CRAZY to OK this pipeline. If they do, the rest of us will live to regret it.

Ask the Canadians why they don't want the Keystone pipeline to go east or west through their own country.

Any gas that produced from this oil is going to get shipped out. America as a country will see very little benefit from this project, yet assume the risk of Oil Spill in our nations bread belt. The Oil companies and investors will make money, Canada will make money. America will gain a few jobs and some sales tax, which most likely will not cover the oil subsidies they receive.
