(NEWSER) - The purebred Labradors, spaniels and collies of the dog-show world have a new rival: mutts. The American Kennel Club has changed its rules after 125 years to allow mixed breeds to compete in some events for the first time ever. At a dog show in Virginia this weekend, Otis, the product of an "illicit tryst between a purebred husky and a rakish Lab-chow neighbor dog," took third place in a "Rally" obedience event, the Washington Post reports. Calif. man sustains minor injury when shot hits him in the back

(NEWSER) - A man out hunting with his dog got a small taste of how ducks must feel when the dog accidentally shot him. The hunter left his shotgun with his Labrador retriever and went to collect some decoy ducks he’d left about 15 yards away. The dog stepped on the gun, releasing the safety and firing a blast of No. 2 shot into the hunter's back. The man was treated at a local hospital and quickly released, the Fresno Bee reports. More»

Feral beagles, abandoned for poor performance by hunters who used them to seek rabbits, have become a serious problem this winter. (NEWSER) - South Korean scientists have cloned a group of four female beagles that glow red under ultraviolet light, the AP reports. The researchers inserted fluorescent genes during the cloning process, an achievement that could lead to advances in human medicine and science. “What’s significant in this work is not the dogs expressing red colors,” the lead researcher said, “but that we planted genes into them.” More»
