(Newser) – The scandal over the IRS targeting Tea Party groups just got more scandalous: Senior IRS officials knew the groups were being singled out for extra scrutiny as early as 2011, according to documents obtained by the AP. Lois Lerner, the head of the IRS division that oversees tax-exempt organizations, was told that agents were targeting groups with "Tea Party," "Patriot," or "9/12 Project" in their names at a meeting two years ago, according to a draft of an inspector general's report expected to come out this week. It also says she instructed them to change the criteria immediately.

But just a few days ago, Lerner told the AP that no high-level IRS officials were aware of the targeting. Lerner is three levels below that of the IRS commissioner. In 2012, then-Commissioner Douglas Shulman told Congress, "There's absolutely no targeting." The part of the report seen by the AP does not say whether Shulman or anyone in the Obama administration was informed of the practice. But the IRS says the report does not contradict what either Shulman or Lerner has said. "While exempt organizations officials knew of the situation earlier, the timeline reflects that IRS senior leadership did not have this level of detail," it said in a statement.

Why do these Tories refer to themselves as Patriots? Don't they know that the Tories are the Traitors?

(This is a response to duxburian from further down in the thread. Sorry it ended up in the wrong place.) I asked if you were referring to Nixon because you made a reference to Conservative Presidents. Nixon wasn't a Conservative. Anybody that knows anything about Nixon would NEVER suggest he was a Conservative. The word Presidents is plural. So who else where you referring to? so we agree that I am not "making crap up" like you claimed I did. You have made up plenty of crap up in this thread. Like claiming that left wing 501(c)(4) organization are different then the 501(c)(4) Tea Party groups. I'm interested to know though - in your mind - does the fact that the charges were dropped mean that Nixon didn't do exactly what I said he did? The impeachment charges were dropped because he resigned from office. Regarding your link: "By law, each United States attorney is subject to removal by the President" When you say: And even if the IRS was being personally directed by President Obama, I'd still not have an issue with that, because that's exactly what was done by conservative presidents during their administrations. That is a statement shows you for what you are. You don't care if laws are broken as long as it is done in the name of your far left wing ideology. What Nixon did 40+ years ago doesn't make it OK for somebody in power today to break the law. You have no moral compass. Prisons are filled with people like you that rationalize their actions.
