(Newser) – On the heels of Angelina Jolie's revelation about her double mastectomy, CNN anchor Zoraida Sambolin—of Early Start—has announced she'll also undergo the procedure. "I struggled for weeks trying to figure out how tell you that I had been diagnosed with breast cancer and was leaving to have surgery," Sambolin wrote on Facebook today. "Then, Angelina Jolie shares her story of a double mastectomy and gives me strength and an opening."

On Early Start today, Sambolin shared a perspective much like Jolie's: "I have two kids that are my world, like any woman, and it's what you think about." Her choice leaves her "confident that [cancer is] not something that I'm going to have to deal with that much more in the future." She also revealed that diagnosis was challenging due to her history of fibrocystic breast tissue, but "I didn't mess around. I [got mammograms] when I was supposed to go, and I followed it diligently." Sambolin's surgery is scheduled for May 28, CNN reports.

Why should I care about what a news anchor does with their personal life? Why do they feel the need to tell their audience it? They read the news, they're not a personality, sheesh.

I have a strong sense that these operations will be seen as completely unnecessary and even futile as better treatments are developed. Is there actually documented evidence that these operations allow women to lead a cancer-free life?
