(Newser) – Celebrities from Madonna to Kate Moss wear Dolce & Gabbana, so one would think Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana are doing pretty well. Not today. A Milan court convicted the pair of tax evasion and sentenced them to one year and eight months in jail. The jail sentences are suspended, however, pending the fashion designers' appeal, the BBC reports.

At the heart of the court battle, per Vogue: Luxembourg-based holding company Gado. Their label's main fashion lines were sold to it in 2004, and prosecutors said the move was made in order to avoid paying taxes in Italy. The investigation has been going on for six years: Two years ago, a judge threw out a tax evasion and fraud case against the pair; Italy's high court later ruled the designers could be prosecuted for tax evasion, though not for fraud, reports the AP.
