(Newser) – Let's say you're the sort who avoids genetically modified food. How do you know your steak has been exercising the same restraint? Until now, you didn't, but now the USDA has approved a non-GMO label for meat and "liquid egg products," the New York Times reports. The label, which comes from the Non-GMO Project rather than the government, certifies that Bessie didn't eat any genetically engineered food before heading to the slaughterhouse.

It's the first GMO-free label the USDA has approved for meat, though the department hastened to say that it didn't represent "any new policy regarding non-GE or non-GMO products," which is something of a hot button issue in the agriculture industry. The USDA has a standing policy of allowing third-party groups to certify products, as long as their claims are accurate.

GMO's have to be an improvement over the various toxins used to processing meat. Antibiotics, steroids, high levels of salt, mysterious indredients with names so long no one can pronounce them, and a long list of who knows what else they pump into livestock feed, and used during processing.

Does that include any horse meat that might have made its way in?

Those who are skeptical of the bona fides of GMO cheerleader "Aelius28" - listen up. A newser story titled New Conn. Law: We'll Label GMOs if Everyone Does has been mysteriously removed from newser's grid of SCIENCE stories. Since the story first appeared on June 4th I've gone back to it several times and always located it there because that was the quickest way. Now it's not there. Please go back and confirm this before it's quietly put back. Aelius28 was totally owned on that story because he/she made so many arrogant and outrageous statements. I was genuinely puzzled at first by his/her aggressiveness, and then outraged when he/she claimed that an intolerant, unreasonable bias for GMO foods should be trusted/ excused since he/she is allegedly a "Canadian Liberal." One of my best comebacks on that story was to put up links to conservative GMO skeptics. On this current story Aelius28 has been more careful and circumspect, sticking to the scripted talking points for the most part. This time the claim is that GMOs are labeled in Europe because they have too much democracy there. On June 4th it was because Europeans are "stupid and uninformed." Nevertheless, the insults hurled at GMO skeptics here are just as cutting and rude. And just like all the climate science denier trolls, Aelius28 refuses to use the email address in my profile to shed his anonymity and have on the record discussions with me. Until he/she agrees to do so I'll remain convinced that the whole schtick is one big troll act. Note: I've long suspected that the newser organization is infiltrated by climate denier types. The mods have been "disappearing" my comments and harrassing me/kokuaguy for years, and now they are doing the same things on the GMO/Monsanto stories. But to see them remove an entire story from the SCIENCE grid pretty much confirms that others inside the actual organization are engaged in dirty tricks and are very brazen about it. I find it hard to believe that Michael Wolff would approve of such sleazy tactics.
