(Newser) – It was a box office battle of the sexes this weekend, with Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy's buddy cop comedy The Heat beating out Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx's big-budget action flick White House Down in their opening weekends, the LA Times reports. The Heat did the best of any new film, and came out No. 2 overall, exceeding expectations by taking in $40 million. White House Down clocked in at No. 4 with a disappointing $25.7 million.

Pixar prequel Monsters University scared off the competition for a second week in a row, taking $46.2 million to retain its No. 1 position. Rounding out the top 5, World War Z came in at No. 3 with $29.8 million, and Man of Steel was No. 5 with $8.7 million.

Neither White House Down or Olympus has Fallen have a thread of believability. I think both of them were poorly planned and developed. The only reason I saw either one was because I have a buddy who really wants to be a secret service agent and when all of them got kacked in both movies, he thinks that means he has a real chance for really good.

Give her a break, if the headline had been "The Heat burns White House Down", it probably would have set off triggers in the NSA's spy software.

Do not like Jamie Foxx at all but love Sandra Bullock who is a fantastic actress, I just cannot wait to see "the Heat" because I feel that it is going to be wonderful.
