(Newser) – The UN's new population forecast for the world has some eye-popping figures, especially about Africa in general and Nigeria in particular. Its charts show that Nigeria, about the size of Texas, will surpass the entire US in population by 2050, reports the Guardian. By 2100, it is expected to have an astonishing 1 billion people and be poised to overtake China, writes Max Fisher in the Washington Post. (The latter country will be shrinking and likely headed for a demographic nightmare.) As for the African continent, it "will see a population explosion nearly unprecedented in human history," he adds.

The biggest nation in 2100, however, is expected to be India, with a population somewhere around 1.5 billion. But its growth will level off around 2065—meaning Nigeria looks on track to be No. 1 in the subsequent decades. As for the US, its growth will rise slowly but steadily over the century and should be around 500 million by 2100. The world's overall population, now at 7.2 billion, is expected to be at 11 billion by then.

"Texas-Sized Nigeria Will Have More People Than US by 2050" Seeing as how the majority of Nigerians live in grinding poverty, this is clearly not a good thing.

President Lincoln's colonization of Nigeria has really taken off. Wonder why it is growing so quick? There is a whole rocking and rolling going on! 1492

Lol, Nigeria's rate of economic growth is also significantly higher[6 times higher] than the US why don't you mention how big its economy will be in 2100 compared to the US? If the U.S. would get its head out of its rear end it would be able to get in on Africa investment from early, but even with the dunce Obama the U.S. is still letting China out play them. Why do you think China is investing so heavily in Africa? No other continent is growing at the economic rate Africa is...and after wages start to rise in China[which they inevitably will over time], where do you think is going to have the cheapest labor for manufacturing? Google Chinese husbands taking African wives, the connection being forged their is going to be pretty deep. Prejudice makes people so stupid. Money is money and the U.S. is leaving a lot on the table and forging its way to mediocrity in large part because of it.
