Nigerian Lesbians Take Forbidden Love on the Run

Posted Apr 27, 07 6:43 PM CDT in World Arts & Living

(Newser) – Five Nigerian lesbians are running for their love after a weekend wedding put them in direct violation of the local Islamic law. Police have issued arrest warrants against Aunty Maiduguri and her four wives, charging them with violating the Sharia law that governs much of northern Nigeria.

The women were married in a rousing weekend ceremony where "thugs" prevented concerned neighbors from stopping the festivities, Nigeria's This Day reports. But they fled soon after the ceremony. The head of the state's environmental agency, which has demolished the building where the wedding took place, explains simply: "Government will not fold its arms to allow this type of ungodliness."
