Wiki Survey Aims to Find Out Who Posts — and Why

Posted Jan 25, 08 2:45 PM CST in Technology

(Newser) – Wikipedia wants to know more about its anonymous authors and has launched a worldwide survey to find out who they are, how much they post, and what type of people go from casual browsers to active contributors. In a first for the site, the survey will attempt to unearth authors' real identities, CNET reports.

Wkipedia's anonymity has raised questions about responsible posting and the feasibility of rule enforcement. Competitor Citizendium requires contributors to use their real names. Dutch company UNU-MERIT, which developed similar polls for Linux and Firefox, will run the Wikipedia survey; results will be announced in July at this year's Wikimania at the Library of Alexandria in Egypt.
