(Newser) – The little girl whose battle to receive a double lung transplant sparked a national debate went home today after several months in the hospital. Sarah Murnaghan recently turned 11 years old. She nearly died waiting for a transplant as end stage cystic fibrosis led to the deterioration of her lungs. Her parents began a campaign to temporarily halt the national transplant “under 12 rule” that only gave children priority when pediatric lungs were available. She was eventually given precedence to receive adult lungs—ultimately saving her life.
