(Newser) The Butler's long run at the top of the box office charts finally came to an end this weekend, with Vin Diesel's Riddick debuting to the tune of $18.7 million to take the No. 1 spot. On the historically slow weekend after Labor Day, it was easily enough to topple The Butler's $8.9 million haul, the AP reports. But it wasn't enough to out-do the previous installment of this sci-fi series, The Chronicles of Riddick, which opened to $24.3 million in 2004. At No. 3 was the Spanish-language Instructions Not Included ($8.1 million), followed by We're the Millers ($7.9 million), and Planes ($4.3 million).

I liked the movie; it had all the action of the prior two movies. I was hoping there would have been more of a continuation of Riddick ruling the necromongers, but this was still a good movie.

i saw it on opening day Sep 6, 2013: It has all the staples in it... 1) Horrific weather/natural conditions. 2) Death of a friend. 3) Betrayal. 4) Test of ultimate courage. 5) Up against an alien army. 6) Religion. 7) Mercenaries. i give it 3.8 out of 5. Note: It is NOT a "reboot"... it's a legitimate sequel (the next chapter).
