(Newser) – A teacher at Florida's Cape Coral High School returned to his classroom at the beginning of the school year and was greeted with a not-so-pleasant surprise: Inside one of the cabinets was a mason jar wrapped in a paper bag ... and inside the jar was a human fetus, WFTX reports. The 8-inch fetus, determined to be about four months past conception and bearing no signs of trauma, was in a formaldehyde solution and well-preserved, according to the police report. WBBH reports that the mystery may be solved—a former teacher apparently used it in child-development classes and it's at least 20 years old—but the sheriff's office is still investigating.

What the big deal? We had one of these in a biology class in high school, in fact if I recall several in various stages of development. No hysterical fuss made about it, it was part of other objects in formeldahyde used as a teaching aid. I suppose in this era of hysteria and the Right to Life nuts they'll have to have a funeral for the long dead pickled human pollywog found in Florida. Maybe even a prayer meeting with candels and flowers?

This is nothing but tabloid journalism. The writer knew that it was discovered that the fetus had been used by a retired teacher for years to teach fetus development in a biology class, yet he/she couldn't resist using a misleading headline to suggest that somehow the fetus was hidden in the cupboard for some sinister reason. I'm still waiting for the pencil drawings as proof there is a real Bat Boy.
