(Newser) – Newly released video shows a scary gun battle as an Oregon State Trooper pulls over a military veteran. The shootout happened in late August about 100 miles east of Portland as a trooper pulled over 34-year-old John Van Allen II. Allen shot the trooper in his left side as patrol car dash cam captured everything. Investigators say the trooper returned fire hitting Allen in the chest. Troopers found Allen half a mile farther down the road dead from his bullet wound.

When anyone having a psychotic episode can have ready access to a gun, this sort of incident is bound to keep happening. At least, the vet got out of his car, so the children weren't in the line of fire.
