(Newser) – Prince Bandar bin Sultan, the former Saudi ambassador and longtime Bush conduit to the Saudi leadersip, may no longer be speaking for his country. The New York Times notes that Bandar's uncle, King Abdullah, has taken several stands recently that surprised the White House by being in direct conflict with assurances given by the Prince.

“The problem is that Bandar has been pursuing a policy that was music to the ears of the Bush administration, but was not what King Abdullah had in mind at all,” says former US ambassador Martin S. Indyk. With America's image in the Muslim world in freefall, Abdullah appears to be eager to establish his independence from his U.S. allies.

(NEWSER) - Iran is demanding access to the Iranian-American man accused of plotting to kill the Saudi ambassador to the United States , reports Reuters . "There is no doubt regarding the baselessness of the US allegations," said an Iranian official, according to Iran's state broadcaster IRIB. "However, providing personal information about the accused and consular access to him is among the duties of the US government. Any delay in that respect would be in contravention of international law and the US government's responsibilities." More»

Saudi King Abdullah overturns court ruling

(AP) - Saudi King Abdullah has overturned a court ruling sentencing a Saudi woman to be lashed 10 times for defying the kingdom's ban on female drivers, a government official said today. The official declined to elaborate on the monarch's decision. A Saudi court yesterday found Shaima Jastaina guilty of violating the driving ban, and sentenced her to 10 lashes. The verdict took Saudi women by surprise, coming just after King Abdullah promised to protect women's rights and decreed that women would be allowed to participate in municipal elections in 2015.
