Impending War Report Could Topple Olmert

Posted Jan 30, 08 3:36 AM CST in World

(Newser) – Ehud Olmert is bracing for a vital challenge to his career as prime minister of Israel, when a report damning his conduct in the 2006 Lebanon war is released later today. The report could topple Olmert's precarious coalition government, the Times of London reports. An interim version of the report already triggered calls for Olmert's resignation.

The interim report found Olmert and his allies guilty of grievous failures in a war that left 1,000 dead and triggered a military and political crisis in Israel. Olmert supporters hope today's report will not go further than the interim report, but fear it will highlight Olmert's controversial launching of an offensive in which 33 Israeli soldiers died.
