(Newser) – And this year's prize for Worst Halloween Costume Idea goes to ... the two British 19-year-olds, who went to a nightclub's costume contest dressed as the Twin Towers on 9/11. That's not the only prize they were awarded: The teens, whose World Trade Center costumes were marked "North Tower" and "South Tower" and were decorated with the two hijacked planes and burning wreckage, won the entire contest and received almost $250 in shopping vouchers.

Not surprisingly, outrage ensued when their story gained attention, and they've since apologized, explaining that they "never meant to be offensive" but rather to "depict a serious, modern-day horror." The Independent has a picture.

Holloween IS ABOUT SCARY AND TRAGIC THINGS! They chose something the knew WAS SCARY AND TRAGIC! WHY is this seen as wrong or offensive? They were NOT making FUN of the event. They were making a sort of remembrance of it! It was NOT disrespectful. It was a COSTUME, NOT A PARODY!

I was a sophomore in high school when it happened. As an adult I've spoken with people just a few years younger about 9/11 and they admit that they didn't experience the impact of 9/11 in the same way I did, or those older than me. Sometimes you're just too young to really get it. If these kids are 19, they're definitely not going to get it.
