(Newser) – About a decade ago, Blockbuster had 9,000 stores at a time when video streaming was more concept than reality. By early January, the last 300 remaining Blockbuster stores in the US will close for good, reports Mashable. Parent Dish Network will keep the Blockbuster name alive in its own streaming services, but the brick-and-mortar element of the franchise will be done, as will its DVD-by-mail service, reports Bloomberg. “This is not an easy decision, yet consumer demand is clearly moving to digital distribution of video entertainment,” says Dish CEO Joseph Clayton.

D@mned rewind fee. Who's laughing now? Well, my cousin got one for sure. Her store closed and she filed a workman's compensation claim for carpel tunnel. It took a while but she proved to the state court that opening up DVD cases for more than 13 years caused damage to her thumbs. She won and they payed up.

Blockbuster was not very good at what they did. Good riddance.

Just an addition to this story, the headline is apparently not entirely accurate , with Dish Network telling the Chicago Tribune that approx. 50 stores that are independent franchises will remain open.,0,2509893.story
