It's 'not the first weight joke thrown my way'

(Newser) – Chris Christie hit four of the five major talk shows today, squarely tackling that whole elephant-in-the-room controversy thusly: "Who cares, I mean, seriously. I'm on the cover of Time magazine, you know?" he said on Fox News Sunday, as per Politico. "It is certainly not the first weight joke that has been thrown my way over the course of the last four years." Given the sheer number of appearances, he had plenty more to say. Some of the highlights:

  • On how he won over female and minority voters: "The lesson is to govern and to show up, and let me explain what I mean. On governing, it's about doing things, accomplishing things, reaching across the aisle and crafting accomplishments. And ... you can't just show up six months before an election into groups that have not normally voted for you and expect that they are going to vote for you. I've been working on this for four years."

  • On whether he'll serve all four years of his newly won term: "Who knows? I don’t know. I’m going to continue to do my job and finish the job. But everybody who is trying to figure out what life is going to bring you a few years from now? I didn’t expect to be sitting here four years ago. Nobody can make those predictions."
  • On whether he's a conservative or a moderate: "I don’t get into these labels. Judge me by my record. That I’m very, very comfortable with. All the labels? That’s for the folks down in Washington, DC. Obviously, they love playing that game."
  • On what he thinks about Iranian nuclear talks: "I’m the governor of New Jersey. I think for me to be expressing opinions on this this morning would be ill-advised and I’m not going to do it. I think there are people who are significantly better briefed on this than I am. I think it’s very dangerous for folks like me to get involved in the middle of this and start giving opinions. We have to let Secretary Kerry do his work."

What no jokes about President Taft being stuck in the White House bathtub? According to what you see waddling around in public places, hippos in stretch pants, or riding around in stores in those electric fat chairs; or so fat they can old fit in pick-up trucks, a fat president would be perfect for the Oval Office because he looks like the average American.

If Governor Christie runs for president, I'm sure that he will have lots of MASS support, although he may be little more than an empty suit -- an empty XXXL suit that is.

I don't care about Christie's weight, but he has a serious chip on his shoulder, as well as an education that's pretty poor for a governor. "Elephant in the room" is NOT a "fat joke" or "weight joke". It is, and has ALWAYS been a reference to any problem or issue that is too big to be ignored, but is not being discussed. An "elephant in the room" could be your skinny niece's anorexia and/or bulimia problem at Thankgiving dinner with the family. Are we saying she's fat or overweight? NO, you stupid, overly-sensitive people. But, if she isn't eating, and everyone is afraid to bring it up, that's like an "elephant in the room". Oh, what elephant? Or, fit and muscle-bound Uncle Jerry just got out of prison after 10 years and nobody wants to talk about it for fear of embarrassing him. (or hearing how he got the prison tat that says: "Jack and Jerry 4-ever" ) Stop feeling sorry for Gov. Christie, and maybe he will stop feeling sorry for himself...
