(Newser) – This week's lesson: It's better to pay a few extra cents for donuts than risk a stint in jail.

  1. Dunkin' Donuts Fan Arrested in Quest for 10% Discount: A Florida man who apparently loves donuts as much as he loves a deal has been arrested after his attempt to pair the two went really wrong. And it all ended with Charles "Chuck" Barry, at the scene of the alleged crime (a Dunkin' Donuts), crying.
  2. Pianist Faces Jail Over Incessant Practicing: Laia Martin is a pianist, and her former neighbor says she practiced five days a week, eight hours a day over a four-year period—and she's suing over it. Crazier still, Martin faces more than seven years in jail. Here's what "Sonia B." alleges.

  1. Woman Rents Out Home That She Doesn't Own: Four students thought they got a good deal when they found a home to rent in South San Francisco for $450 a room. Just one problem: After paying the woman they thought was the landlord $1,800 and moving in on Nov. 1 ... they were kicked out, and police explain how the scam allegedly worked.
  2. Infomercial Pitchman Guilty of Lying in Ads: It took jurors about as long as one of Kevin Trudeau's infomercials to convict the TV pitchman of lying. In the late-night ads, Trudeau pushed his best-selling book, The Weight Loss Cure They Don't Want You to Know About, and said it would show people how to lose weight and still eat whatever they want. But there was one big problem.
  3. Guy Named Batman Jailed for Burglary: Say it ain't so, Batman! A Singaporean man was sentenced to almost three years in jail after failing badly to live up to his name—which is, we are not kidding, Batman bin Suparman. Here's how the superhero-named man got caught.
