(Newser) – A Yale professor who was arrested last weekend and died in his jail cell apparently led a secret life on at least four male escort websites, the New Haven Register reports. Samuel See, 34—who was considered a gifted English prof at Yale—had his phone number listed on all four sites, while a photo on one site matched the image on a LinkedIn page under his name. But two of See's former colleagues say it's all news to them. "For the moment, I am trying to absorb the loss," said a fellow Yale professor.

Police arrested See last weekend in New Haven, Conn., after he and his estranged husband, 32-year-old Sunder Ganglani, each violated restraining orders against the other in an encounter. Yet professors and students are painting a brighter picture, of a gifted writer whose work focused on sexual orientation in modern literature. "Sam See was my first English prof at Yale and the first prof I ever really connected with," tweeted Larissa Pham. "Rest in peace, Sam, you’re going to be missed." See's cause of death is unknown pending an autopsy report.
