In behavior that probably would have led to their beheadings in an earlier time, police officers on duty in Buckingham Palace infuriated Queen Elizabeth II by helping themselves to nuts left out in bowls in the royal residence, Britain's phone-hacking trial heard yesterday. The Queen was "furious" about the pilfering, the News of the World's former royal editor wrote in an email read to the court. "She has a very savory tooth and staff leave out cashews, Bombay Mix almonds, etc."

The irritated monarch apparently did some sleuthing to see who had been nibbling her snacks, the Guardian reports. "She started marking the bowls to see when the levels dipped," the email states, noting that a memo has "now gone around to all palace cops telling them to keep their sticky fingers out." Amid laughter, the judge reminded the court that the nut-stealing was "an unproven allegation," reports the BBC. The royal editor is among several former News of the World editors accused of hacking phones and paying cops for information. (Could the queen's love of nuts be helping her live longer? Maybe.)
