(Newser) Saturday Night Live didn't have to look much further than President Obama's exhaustively discussed trip to South Africa this week, with Kenan Thompson gleefully signing gibberish behind Jay Pharoah's Obama in the episode's Cold Open. After Obama runs him off, Kate McKinnon as Angela Merkel comes in search of a selfie, telling him, "I have und favor to ask. Ze Danish Prime Minister has been bragging all over Northern Europe about her selfie with you. And I vas hoping that I could get one as well." Turned away, she laments, "Oh really? I feel like you kind of owe me after the whole wire-tapping mein cell phone thing." Check the full video in the gallery, as well as what Katie McDonough over at Salon calls Bobby Moynihan's "NSFH (not suitable for humanity)" spoof on a Guy Fieri Christmas special.

The morning that happened, I was catching the feeds on ABC Newsone channels 1 and 2. Ch.2 was the clean feed from the stadium. Because it had live captioning, they did not include closed captions. I was noticing that the guy was making some very bizarre gestures and just had one of the sinking feelings something bad was happening although I could not nail it down. I then covered my A by telling my superiors we needed to call up the captioning service and quickly get live closed captioning started or else we could be out of compliance with FCC. My bosses noted my request and went back to sleep. That was one of those, "You can't screw me" deals after the spam hit the fan later on.

Where would SNL be without Newser?

Nobody would touch Obama for the first five years. Now that apparently the media has figured out he's an empty suit, the dam has broken. Even lefty Leno has jokes about the President nearly every night.
