An Indiana woman became a widow while still wearing her wedding dress when her husband was run over and killed after stopping to help a motorist in trouble. Nikki Knight says she and new husband William Riley Knight were on their way to a hotel just a few hours after their wedding when he spotted a woman whose vehicle had slid into a ditch, NBC reports. "He said, 'We’ve got to stop. It’s late and they need help,'" she says. Knight, 49, and the motorist were killed when they were struck by multiple vehicles as they stood at the side of the road.

The accident is still under investigation, but police do not believe alcohol was a factor. Knight, a former US Army Ranger, "was the type of person who was willing to put himself on the line and support you no matter what," his widow says. "He was just trying to do a good thing for somebody in need," a police spokeswoman tells CNN. "It's very sad. We have a job to do here, but sometimes it just brings you sadness."
