In this March 12, 2008, file photo, New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer announces his resignation as wife Silda stands by. The Spitzers announced last night that they are kaput.   (AP Photo/Stephen Chernin, File)

(Newser) – Almost five years after everyone expected Silda Wall Spitzer to dump Eliot, she finally got around to it: A day after the NY Post's gleeful report that the erstwhile Client No. 9 had a girlfriend, the couple announced their split in a Christmas Eve statement sure to warm the hearts of, well, no one: "We regret that our marital relationship has come to an end and we have agreed not to make any other public statement on this subject." Rumors of the divorce have been swirling since 2008, er, July, but the Post reports that the couple is negotiating a settlement that will leave Spitzer's Manhattan real estate holdings untouched.

Look, the guy has had enough of the old crow and is looking to go have a good time for a few years before he kicks the bucket. What does he really have left? Another 15 or so years before he starts drooling in a wheelchair and going senile? About the money, you can't take it with you, you know, so even after she gets whatever he will still have plenty left over for himself and his fun for about 10 or so years.
