(Newser) – Kobe Bryant can't accuse the Lakers' management for not trying to build a supporting cast around him anymore. Today, they traded career disappointment and former No. 1 overall pick Kwame Brown to Memphis for Pau Gasol, a shining light on an otherwise disappointing Grizzlies team. Additional players, including Gasol's brother Marc, and picks were also exchanged, reports the L.A. Times.

Gasol, a former rookie of the year, fills an immediate need for L.A. at center, while rising star Andrew Bynum recovers from a knee injury. While the 7-footer from Spain averaged nearly 19 points per game for Memphis through his career, Gasol's teams failed to win a single playoff game. Said Bryant: "Now it's time to walk the walk."
