(Newser) – A rare, huge blue diamond was found in a South African mine earlier this month. The 29.6-carat sparkler is about six times larger than an acorn, and could be worth as much as $20 million. The dazzling stone was dug up by New Jersey-based Petra Diamonds at its Cullinan Diamond Mine near Pretoria. The company gushed about the discovery in a statement yesterday, saying, "The stone is an outstanding vivid blue with extraordinary saturation, tone, and clarity, and has the potential to yield a polished stone of great value and importance."

Rubys and emeralds are far more rare than diamonds but cost about a quarter of what a similar carat diamond would fetch. This is done through artificial supply and demand by DeBeers. They spend hundreds of millions of dollars on campaigns to get people to buy diamonds and also hoard bags of them to create an illusion of a limited supply. Actually now that I think about it.........what a great business!!!

If I were that miner, I would have tried to sneak it out myself, and taken the risk of being caught...
