The man who opened fire in a Maryland mall over the weekend, killing two skate shop employees before taking his own life, does not appear to have had any relationship with his victims, police say. Investigators aren't sure what Darion Marcus Aguilar's motive for the attack was, but they say a journal found in the home of the 19-year-old Dunkin' Donuts manager reveals "some general unhappiness with his life," NBC reports. Aguilar, who used a legally bought shotgun, also had some crude homemade explosives in his bag, police say.

Former classmates describe Aguilar as a quiet youth with a keen interest in skateboarding. A family friend says Aguilar's mother had no idea that he owned a gun. "His mother right now is struggling for a reason to live," he tells the Baltimore Sun. "It's become an epidemic right now. Every week we're reading about someone shooting in a mall … What out there in our world is angering these children that makes them do something like this?" (More Darion Marcus Aguilar stories.)
