New Jersey comes from behind to top Crosby-less Pittsburgh 4-3

(Newser) – The Devils trailed the Penguins 3-1 entering the third period but two quick goals by Jamie Langenbrunner and David Clarks tied up the score, and Zach Parise netted the game winner just 37 seconds into the extra period to give New Jersey a 4-3 win. New Jersey, Pittsburgh, and Philadelphia are now tied for first in the Atlantic Division, reports the Associated Press.

Martin Brodeur made 31 saves and was credited with an assist on the winning goal. Patrik Elias scored a goal and had two assists for New Jersey; Parise also recorded two assists. Jordan Staal, Petr Sykora and Ryan Malone had Pittsburgh’s three goals. The Penguins are now 3-2-2 since Sidney Crosby went down with an ankle injury.

(NEWSER) - The NHL's Minnesota Wild signed an emergency goalie today, which is news only because the guy is 51 years old and owns an embroidery store. As it turns out, Jim Deutsch won't have to suit up for an NHL game, but he came thisclose, reports the Minneapolis Star Tribune . The team got in a pickle when it found out usual starter Nik Backstrom couldn't play in tonight's game. Backup Josh Harding got the nod, and the team called up a minor league goalie to back up Harding. Problem: It wasn't a sure thing that the minor league goalie's plane would arrive in time. More»

Philly refuses to move to call out Tampa's boring 'trap' strategy

(NEWSER) - Bizarro moment in an NHL game last night: The Philadelphia Flyers refused to budge with the puck, and Tampa refused to go after them. It actually happened multiple times, with the Flyers trying to send a message about Tampa’s reviled “trap” system. The trap is a defensive scheme apparently designed to bore the opponent (and spectators) to death: Instead of forechecking, Tampa players keep back, then clog the center of the rink when the other team begins skating up ice. It’s effective, but it makes for a dull game mostly devoid of free skating. More»

Fan Tosses Banana Peel at Black NHL Player

Philadelphia Flyers' Wayne Simmonds is the on-ice target

(NEWSER) - Very classy act from a hockey fan in Canada: Someone tossed a banana peel onto the ice as Wayne Simmonds—one of the few black players in the NHL—skated toward the net during a shootout last night, reports the Philadelphia Inquirer . The peel landed in the path of the Flyers player, though he still scored on the Red Wings goalie. "I caught it from the side of my eye," Simmonds said. "It was a banana. Hopefully, that wasn't directed towards me being black." More»

Atlanta Loses Hockey Team to Winnipeg

Poor attendance, bad record will send the Thrashers north

(AP) - Proving for a second time that Hotlanta may be too hot for hockey, the Atlanta Thrashers are moving to Winnipeg. The Thrashers entered the NHL in 1999 as an expansion franchise, but ownership problems, a losing team, and dwindling attendance doomed the club. It has been purchased by True North Sports and Entertainment in a deal worth $170 million, including a $60 million relocation fee that would be split by the rest of the league. The Thrashers ranked 28th out of 30 teams this year with an average attendance of less than 14,000. More»
