(Newser) – Long Island police have a high-profile shooting on their hands: Gary Melius, a well-connected developer, was shot in the head as he got into his Mercedes near the castle he calls home, reports the New York Post. Yes, castle. In fact, if you've seen Citizen Kane, you've seen the exteriors of the Melius' Oheka Castle, reports the New York Times. The 69-year-old is expected to recover. He was able to get back to his house after being shot through the driver's side window, and his daughter got him to the hospital. The shooter is still at large.

“We don’t have a motive at this point," says a Suffolk detective, but "it doesn’t appear to be an accidental shooting." Pal (and former Sen.) Alfonse D'Amato went further, labeling it an "assassination attempt." Melius is not only a bigshot developer, he is what the Daily News calls a "heavy hitter in the blood sport of Long Island politics," and thus would likely have a long list of enemies. As an example of just how well-connected he is, all the stories note that Melius and his castle hosted the 2010 wedding of Anthony Weiner and Huma Abedin, officiated by Bill Clinton.
