(Newser) – Photographer Marc Israel Sellem of the Jerusalem Post wins craziest-photo-of-the-day honors, and it might be tough to beat him in all of 2014. He captured Benjamin Netanyahu casting a shadow on German leader Angela Merkel's face that looks for all the world like a Hitler mustache, reports Mediaite. The Post initially didn't run the photo, but sister paper Israel Post did, and it soon became an Internet smash. Haaretz rounds up some of the reaction here.

"When I saw the photo on my computer, I thought that it was unique and funny," says Sellem. "It was not my intention to insult Merkel in any way or to make any kind of Nazi connotation with the photo."

What really surprises me is that the people in the comments seem to this this was on purpose. Like, are you seriously that stupid? He's clearly pointing at someone acknowledging him, Obama does that all the time in photos. This was a lucky "get" by the photographer with all the flashes and photographs being taken simultaneously. I can't believe some people actually twist this into it being planned...
