Romney Ends White House Bid

Posted Feb 7, 08 11:23 AM CST in Politics

(Newser) – In the wake of his poor Super Tuesday showing, Mitt Romney ended his presidential campaign this afternoon, CNN reports. In a rousing address at a conservative conference today, the former Massachusetts governor said, “If this were only about me, I’d go on”—but that his presence in the race was preventing a Republican nominee from taking his candidacy national.

Blasting the Democrats for wanting to leave Iraq, Romney conceded defeat: “I simply cannot let my campaign be a part of aiding a surrender to terror.” The fate of Romney's 270 delegates remains unclear, but the former Olympics exec spoke as though the GOP nominee was now decided: “I disagree with Senator McCain on a lot of issues…I now have to stand aside for our party and our country.”
