A 28-year-old Michigan woman was among those who married her partner during the one day that gay marriage was legal in the state, and she'd been featured on the news because of it. Then, Monday night, as she got off a bus in Ypsilanti Township and walked through a parking lot toward her home, she was approached by three men who called her a gay slur and asked if she'd been on the news recently. They then assaulted her, punching her to the ground and kicking her as she was unconscious, Michigan Live reports.

"One of the males stated, 'Hey (expletive). Are you that (anti-gay slur) from the news?' One of the males then punched her in the face, which knocked her to the ground and unconscious," reads a statement from the sheriff's office. Police are looking for the men, who fled on foot. They could face hate crime as well as assault charges, the Detroit Free Press reports, though an LGBT advocate notes that Michigan laws are relatively weak in terms of LGBT protections. The victim is expected to make a full recovery. (More gay marriage stories.)
