(Newser) – It may sound like a made-up headline from a supermarket tabloid, but it's true: Police in Pakistan charged a 9-month-old baby with attempted murder, reports the Times of India. Little Muhammad Mosa Khan even showed up in court on his grandfather's lap, clutching his bottle, reports AFP. Police say the infant (somehow) was among about 30 adults who pelted officers and gas company officials with rocks—hence the attempted murder charges—when they went after gas thieves in Lahore. But the baby's grandfather says the charges against everyone, not just the child, are trumped up.

He says people were trying to block the gas company employees from removing their meters in a bid to force eviction when police showed up. The judge at this week's hearing seemed aghast at the infant's presence but couldn't dismiss the charges because it wasn't within his jurisdiction, reports the News website. He did, however, grant bail to the baby, and it looks like the kid will have a clean record soon: The chief minister in Punjab suspended the official who filed the charges and ordered an investigation, reports the Nation.
