Giants Reward Spagnuolo for Staying

(Newser) – The Washington Redskins loss is the New York Giants gain. Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo took himself out of the running for the Redskins coaching job and instead accepted a three-year contract from the Giants yesterday, reports for New York Times. The contract, which pays $2 million a season, makes Spagnuolo one of the highest paid defensive coordinators in the NFL.

Spagnuolo, 48, said he appreciated the chance to talk with the Redskins, but he is happy to stay with the Giants. He became a hot coaching prospect when his defense shut down the high-scoring New England Patriots in the Super Bowl, holding them to a season-low 14 points. This was Spagnuolo's first year with the Giants after eight as linebackers coach for the Eagles.
