At least 10 people have been killed and 35 injured in a horrific three-vehicle crash in northern California involving a FedEx truck, a tour bus carrying high school students, and a Nissan Altima. The California Highway Patrol says the truck crossed a median and slammed into the bus on the other side of Interstate 5 around 100 miles north of Sacramento, causing an explosion and a fire just after 5:30pm yesterday. The drivers of the bus and truck were killed, as well as five teenage students and three adult chaperones, the AP reports. Authorities say the car that was involved in the crash was in front of the FedEx truck, which may have been trying to avoid it; the truck sideswiped the sedan before crossing the median. But the exact cause of the crash is still under investigation.

Dozens of victims were hospitalized with injuries including severe burns and broken limbs. "The victims were teenage kids," a firefighter tells KCRA. "A lot of them were freaked out. They were shocked. They still couldn't grasp what happened." The tour bus was carrying students from a number of South LA County high schools, who were on their way to a spring break tour of Humboldt University, reports the Los Angeles Times. Humboldt chartered the bus as part of its Preview Plus program, meant to attract low-income and first-generation college students, the New York Times reports. "Our hearts go out to those who have been affected, and we are here to support them, and their families, in any way possible," the university's president said in a statement.
