Microsoft's Plan to Drop XP in June Draws Fire

Posted Feb 8, 08 7:24 PM CST in Technology

(Newser) – Microsoft is facing vocal opposition to its decision to stop selling the Windows XP operating system June 30, 13 months after the launch of Windows Vista, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Vista has sold well, aided by its default inclusion with new PCs, but users have complained of compatibility troubles. Some have returned to XP or are holding out for Microsoft’s next OS.

Infoworld.com got 80,000 people to sign its petition to extend XP’s availability until at least the end of the year. "Vista is NOT progress. It's clunky, cumbersome, gobbles memory like my kids eat Skittles, and is nothing but a lame 'me-too' product," reads a typical entry. Typical rejoinder: "You babies need to grow up and switch from diapers to underwear."
