An American man who was a well-respected teacher at some of the world's top international schools for decades appears to be one of the most prolific pedophiles the FBI has ever dealt with, investigators say. The FBI says it has been contacted by hundreds of potential victims from around the world in its investigation of William Vahey, who killed himself earlier this year when evidence of molestation was found on a memory drive stolen from his home in Nicaragua by a maid, the AP reports.

The FBI says images of up to 90 boys aged 12 to 14 were on the memory drive. The 64-year-old teacher frequently led boys on overnight trips, and the FBI says he would feed the teenagers drug-laced cookies at bedtime, then touch them and pose for lewd photos as they slept. He was convicted of lewd and lascivious behavior in 1969 for pinching the penises of young boys at a California high school where he gave swimming lessons, but that did not prevent him finding employment in international schools in cities including London, Tehran, and Jakarta. The chair of governors at London's Southbank International School, where Vahey is suspected of molesting scores of boys, tells the BBC that it "beggars belief" that Vahey was allowed to teach despite a child sex abuse conviction.
