Bonds Hitless in Search for New Club

Posted Feb 10, 08 2:03 PM CST in Sports

(Newser) – Barry Bonds might have a bulked-up home run record on his resume, but his steroids-related indictment has thus far made his MLB job search a strikeout, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. The all-time home run leader, now 43, remains a free agent after San Francisco cut him loose last year—despite his repeated claims that he would return to the field in 2008.

Bonds was indicted in November for perjury and obstruction of justice for denying any knowing use of performance-enhancing drugs, so taking him on would bring a team “instant baggage,” writes Janie McCauley. Baseball bigwigs worry that signing Bonds could warp team chemistry and upset fans. And for his longtime organization, the San Francisco Giants, it’s time “to move on,” says a player.
