Barack Obama continued his weekend sweep by winning the Maine caucuses today, MSNBC projects. Glacial temperatures and 8 inches of snow didn't stop lineups from forming across the state, where one Obama backer called him "a once-in-a-generation leader." Obama currently leads Hillary Clinton by 57% to 42% with 70% of votes tallied.
Both hopefuls stumped for Maine's 24 delegates yesterday after their Democratic presidential race recently tightened. They also bombarded residents with TV and radio ads and rang homes with automated phone calls. High-profile backers have visited to boost interest in both candidates, including Sen. Edward Kennedy for Obama and Maine Gov. John Baldacci for Clinton.
