Clemens' Lawyer in Hot Water

Posted Feb 11, 08 5:32 PM CST in Sports

(Newser) – The battle rages on in the Roger Clemens steroid scandal, but this time it's his lawyer who is under fire. The chairman of the congressional committee overseeing one inquiry into steroid use in baseball criticized Rusty Hardin for comments he made about IRS agent Jeff Novitzky. “If he ever messes with Roger, Roger will eat his lunch,” Hardin said.

Chairman Henry Waxman believes the comments could be interpreted as intimidating a federal official. Hardin said he regrets his choice of words, but believes it is Novitzky who is intimidating witnesses. He says the agent’s actions thus far have been an attempt to quell Clemens' effort in defending his reputation. Clemens’ former trainer, Brian McNamee, has been cooperating with Novitzky throughout a separate investigation and won't be charged with any crimes if his testimony is truthful.
