Elton John: WWJD? Approve of Gay Marriage

Elton John is finally getting married, and the outspoken singer thinks Jesus would totally be down with gay marriage—even among priests (he's claimed Jesus was himself gay in the past). "If Jesus Christ was alive today, I cannot see him, as the Christian person that he was and the great person that he was, saying this could not happen," John tells Sky News. "He was all about love and compassion and forgiveness and trying to bring people together and that's what the church should be about."

Rolling Stone notes that the Church of England refuses to allow gay priests to marry while Catholicism requires celibacy; John dismisses these two stances as "old and stupid things." His own pending nuptials, he says, won't happen until next year and will be "very quiet and off the cuff." John laments a backslide in gay rights in Russia, which he plans to visit in November. "I will try and meet (Vladimir) Putin and I will try to talk to him. I don't know what good it will do. But unless you build a bridge—it's no good putting up a wall and saying I'm not talking to these people. The only thing that gets solved is by talking to people." (More Elton John stories.)
