Martin Gerber stopped 28 shots for the Senators, including a John Madden breakaway as the third period wound down, but it wasn’t enough as Ottawa fell 3-2 to New Jersey in overtime. Brian Gionta scored on a rebound about halfway through the extra period to give the Devils their second straight win, reports the Ottawa Sun. Elsewhere in the NHL:

  • Kari Lehtonen had 39 saves to give the Thrashers a 3-2 shootout victory over the Capitals. Alex Ovechkin scored his league-leading 48th goal with 1:21 left in regulation to force overtime.
  • Robert Lang, Brent Seabrook, James Wisniewski and Martin Havlat each had a goal and an assist as the Chicago Blackhawks routed the Columbus Blue Jackets 7-2. Dustin Byfuglien scored twice for Chicago.
