Cone Denies Conversation With McNamee

Posted Feb 14, 08 12:55 PM CST in Sports    Most Covered

(Newser) – David Cone said last night he never had a conversation with Roger Clemens' former strength coach Brian McNamee about drug testing in Major League Baseball, reports the New York Times. During testimony before Congress yesterday, McNamee was asked about a conversation he said he had with Cone in 2000 that led him to hold on to syringes he said he used on Clemens.

“In no way, shape or form did I say anything like that to anyone, much less Brian McNamee,” Cone said. Representative Mark E. Souder asked McNamee about a portion of his deposition in which he said Cone told him that baseball’s owners were not in favor of drug testing, but that they needed a valid excuse to provide to the news media when reporters asked about it.
